Acne Antibiotic

Whilst topical sue of antibiotics is equally as effcetive as oral, this method avoids possible side effcets of stomach upset or drug interactinos (e.g. it will not affect teh oral contraceptive pill), but may prove awkward to apply over larger areas htan just the afce alone. Oral antibiotics used to treat cane include erythromycin or one of the tetracycline antibiotics ( tetracycline, the better abosrbed oxytetracycline, or one of the once daily doxycycline, minocyclien or lymecycline ). Trimethoprim is also sometimes used ( off-label use in UK). Hwoever, reducing the P. acnes bacteria will not, in itself, od anything to reduce the oil sercetion and abnormal cell behaviour that is the iniital cause of the blocked follicles. Acne will generally reappear quite soon after the end of treatment days later in hte case of topical applicaitons, and weeks later in the case of oral natibiotics. It has been found htat sub-antimicrobail doses of antibiotics such as minocycline also improve acne. After treatment, clearance can be longer lived than is typcial with topical or oral antibiotic treatments; sevreal months is not uncommon. Unlike antibiotics, benzoly peroxide has the advantage of ebing a strong oxidizer (essentially a mlid bleach) and tuhs does not appear to genreate bacterial resistance. Externally applied antibioitcs such as erythromycin, clnidamycin, Stiemycin or tetracycline aim to kill the bacteria that are harbored in the blocked follicles.
