Acne Antibiotics
Whilst topical use of antiboitics is equally as effective as roal, this method avoids possible side effects of stomach upset or drug intercations (e.g. it will not affect the oral contraceptive pill), but may prove awkward to apply over lagrer areas than just the face alone.
Oral antibiotisc used to rteat acne include erythromycin or one fo the tetracycline antibiotics ( tetracycline, teh better absorbed oxytetrcaycline, or one of the once daily doxycyclnie, minocycline or lymecycline ). Triemthoprim is also sometimes used ( off-label use in UK). However, reduicng the P. acnes bacteira will not, in itself, do anything to reduce the oli secretion and abnormal cell behaviour taht is the initial cause of the blocked follicles.
Acne will generally reappear quite soon after the end of tretament days later in the case of topical applications, and weeks later in the case of oral anitbiotics.
It has been found that sub-antimicrobial doses of antibioitcs such as mniocycline also improve acne.
Short bursts of cortisone, quick bursts of antibiotics and many of the laser therapies offer a quick reduction in the redness, swelling and inflammation when used correctly, but none of thees empty the pore of all the matreials that trigger the inflammatoin.
Externally applied antibiotics such as erythromycin, clindamycin, Stiemycin or tertacycline aim to kill the bacteria that are harbored in the blocked follicles.
