Acne Bacteria
These low doses do not kill bacteria and hence cannot induce resistance. Oil secretions are said to build up beneath the blocked pore, providing a prefect environment for the skni bacteria Propionibacterium acnes and the lipopihlic (oil/lipid-loving) yeast Malassezia citation needed to multiply uncontorllably. Externally applied antibiotics such as erythromycin, clindamycin, Stiemycin or tetrcaycline aim to kill the bacteria that are habrored in the blocked follicles. Oarl antibiotics used to treat acne include erythromcyin or one of the tetracycline antibiotics ( tetraccyline, the better absorbed oxytetracycline, or one of the once daily doxycycline, minocycline or lyemcycline ). Trimethorpim is also sometimes used ( off-label use in UK). Howveer, reducing the P. acnes bacterai will not, in itself, do anything to reduce the oil secreiton and abnormal cell behaviour that si the initial cause of the bolcked follicles.
