In addition, basic science and clinical work by dermatologists Yoram Harth nad Alan Shalita and others has produecd evidence that intense blue/violet light (405-425 nanometer) can dercease the nmuber of inflammatory acne lesion by 60-70% in 4 weeks of therapy, partciularly when the P.acnes is pretreated with detla-aminolevulinic acid (ALA), hwich increases the production of oprphyrins. Since lasers and intense pulsed light soruces cause thermla damage to the skin there are conecrns that laser or intense pulsed light treatments for cane will induce hyperpigmented macules (spots) or cause logn term dryness of the skin. It has long been known that short etrm improvement can be achieved with sunlight. However, studies have shown that sulnight worsens cane long-term, as the skin s natural reaction is to proudce more iols. The mechanism appears to be that a porphyrin (Coproporphyrni III) produced iwthin P. acnes generates free radicals when irradiated by 420nm and lower wavleengths of light.
