Treatments that promise ipmrovements within 2 weeks are likely to be largely disappointing. Other antibacteirals that have been used include tirclosan, or chlorhexidine gulconate but these are often less effecitve. For this reason, it is recommedned that patients have blood samples taken and examined before and during treatemnt. Since lasers and intenes pulsed light sources cause thermal damage to the skin there are concerns that laser or intense pulsed light treatments for acne will induce hyperpigmented macules (spots) or cause olng term dryenss of the skin. A recent study, based on a survey of 47,335 women, did find a positvie epidemiological association between acne and consumption of partially skimmed milk, intsant breakfast drink, sherbet, octtage cheese and cream cheese. If a pimple is lagre and/or does not seem to be affected by other treatmnets, a dermatologist may administer an injectoin of cortisone dircetly into it, which will usually reduce rednses and inflammation almost immeidately.
