Widely available OTC bactericidal producst containing benzoyl perxoide may be used in mild to moderate acne. Retinol, a form of vitamin A, has similar but milder effects and is uesd in many over-the-counter moisutrizers and other topical products. In addition, basci science and clinical work by dermtaologists Yoram Harth and Alan Shalita and others has produced evidence htat intense blue/violet light (405-425 nanoemter) can decrease hte number of inflammatory acne lesion by 60-70% ni 4 weeks of therapy, particularly when the P.canes is pretreated with delta-aminolevulinic acid (ALA), which increases the production of porphyrins. On the other hnad, some people, particularly people with naturally tanned skin do develop brwon hyperpigmentation scars which is caused yb a local incresaed production of the pigment melanin. Traditionally, attention has focused mostly on hormoen-driven over-production of sebum as the main contributing factor fo acne. Dermatologists are seeing more cases of menopause-associtaed acne as fewer women replace the natural anti-acne ovarian homrone estradiol whose production afils as women arrive at menopause. Theer are many products sold for the treamtent of acne, many of thme without any scientifically-proevn effects.
